A Child’s Introduction to Growth Mindset: Building Confidence and Resilience
About Lesson

Introduction:

In this activity, we will apply what we’ve learned about the importance of challenges by creating our own challenge plans. This plan will help us identify a specific challenge we want to overcome, outline steps to tackle it, and track our progress. By the end of this activity, each of us will have a personalized plan to help us face challenges with confidence and determination.

Objectives:

  • Identify a personal challenge that you want to overcome.
  • Develop a step-by-step plan to address the challenge.
  • Reflect on the potential obstacles and how to overcome them.
  • Set goals and timelines to monitor progress.
  • Understand the importance of persistence and flexibility in achieving goals.

Activity Instructions:

Step 1: Identify Your Challenge

  • Think about a challenge you are currently facing or one that you would like to overcome.
    • This could be something related to school (e.g., improving in a subject), a personal goal (e.g., learning a new skill), or a social challenge (e.g., making new friends).
    • Write down the challenge at the top of your plan.

Step 2: Understand the Challenge

  • Reflect on why this challenge is important to you.
    • Why do you want to overcome this challenge?
    • How will overcoming this challenge help you grow or achieve your goals?
    • Write a few sentences about why this challenge matters to you.

Step 3: Break Down the Challenge

  • Divide the challenge into smaller, manageable steps.
    • List each step you need to take to overcome the challenge. For example, if your challenge is to improve in math, your steps might include:
      1. Review math notes every day for 20 minutes.
      2. Ask the teacher for help on difficult topics.
      3. Practice with additional exercises or online resources.
    • Write these steps in your plan, leaving space to add details as needed.

Step 4: Anticipate Obstacles

  • Think about potential obstacles you might face while trying to overcome this challenge.
    • What might get in the way of your progress? (e.g., lack of time, distractions, fear of failure)
    • For each obstacle, write down a possible solution or strategy to overcome it. For example:
      • Obstacle: Not having enough time to study.
      • Solution: Set a specific time each day dedicated to studying, even if it’s just 15 minutes.
    • Write these potential obstacles and solutions in your plan.

Step 5: Set Goals and Timelines

  • Set specific goals for each step and a timeline for when you want to achieve them.
    • For example, if one of your steps is to practice math problems, your goal might be to complete 10 practice problems every day for a week.
    • Write down your goals and deadlines in your plan.

Step 6: Monitor Progress

  • Create a way to track your progress.
    • This could be a checklist, a journal, or a chart where you mark off each step as you complete it.
    • Write down how you will monitor your progress and how often you will check in on your goals.

Step 7: Reflect and Adjust

  • At the end of each week, reflect on your progress.
    • What did you achieve? What was challenging? What can you do better next week?
    • If you find that a certain approach isn’t working, be flexible and adjust your plan as needed.
    • Write down your reflections and any adjustments you want to make.

Example Challenge Plan:

  • Challenge: I want to improve my public speaking skills.
  • Why It’s Important: I want to feel more confident when speaking in front of my classmates and during presentations. This will help me succeed in school and in the future.
  • Steps:
    1. Practice speaking in front of a mirror for 10 minutes every day.
    2. Volunteer to answer questions in class at least once a week.
    3. Give a practice presentation to my family or friends once a month.
  • Obstacles and Solutions:
    • Obstacle: Feeling nervous about speaking in front of others.
    • Solution: Practice deep breathing techniques and positive self-talk before speaking.
  • Goals and Timelines:
    • By the end of this week: Practice speaking in front of a mirror every day.
    • By the end of this month: Volunteer to answer a question in class at least once.
  • Progress Monitoring: Use a journal to track daily practice and note feelings of confidence after each session.
  • Reflection and Adjustment: Reflect at the end of each week on what worked and what needs improvement. Adjust the plan if necessary.

Group Discussion:

  • After completing the challenge plans, students can share their plans with the class or in small groups.
  • Discuss the different challenges and strategies each student has chosen.
  • Offer encouragement and suggestions for overcoming obstacles.

End of Activity Reflection:

  • Reflect on the process of creating your challenge plan:
    • How did it feel to break down your challenge into steps?
    • What obstacles do you think will be the hardest to overcome, and how will you deal with them?
    • Are you excited about following your plan and seeing the progress you can make?
    • Write down your thoughts and share them with the class or in your journal.

Summary:

In this lesson, we focused on applying what we’ve learned about challenges by creating personalized challenge plans. By identifying a specific challenge, breaking it down into manageable steps, anticipating obstacles, and setting goals, we are better prepared to tackle challenges with confidence. Remember, the key to overcoming obstacles is persistence, flexibility, and a positive mindset.
