Learn about tuberculosis, its causes, symptoms, treatment options, and prevention methods.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. The bacteria that cause TB are spread from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.
TB can be latent (inactive) or active. In latent TB, you have the infection but the bacteria remain in your body in an inactive state and cause no symptoms. Active TB makes you sick and can spread to others.
Emergency symptoms: Coughing up blood, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing
Concerning symptoms: Fever lasting >1 week, unintentional weight loss >5% body weight
Mild symptoms: Mild cough <3 weeks, slight fatigue
TB is treated with antibiotics for 6 to 9 months. The exact drugs and length of treatment depend on your age, overall health, possible drug resistance, and whether the TB is latent or active.
Initial phase (2 months): Isoniazid, Rifampin, Pyrazinamide, Ethambutol
Continuation phase (4 months): Isoniazid, Rifampin
MDR-TB (Multidrug-resistant): 18-24 months with second-line drugs including Bedaquiline, Linezolid
XDR-TB (Extensively drug-resistant): Individualized regimens based on drug susceptibility testing
